Astaire also posed for LIFE photographer Gjon Mili dancing with his sister Adele Douglass, who was Astaire’s original dance partner—the two began in vaudeville together and premiered on Broadway as a duo in 1917. In recent years Hollywood has made several biographical movies about people who were prominent during LIFE’s original run as a magazine from 1936 to 1972. And while Katzman’s work didn’t garner much respect in its day, time has been kind to the sorts of films he produced. And while that film’s star was Johnny Weissmuller, Dean’s camera couldn’t help but gravitate toward Max Palmer, an 8-foot-6 professional wrestler who was playing a character called Man Ape. This picture was basis for story that Feininger later developed for LIFE in 1955.
Though life is confirmed only on Earth, many think that extraterrestrial life is not only plausible, but probable or inevitable, possibly resulting in a biophysical cosmology instead of a mere physical cosmology. The individual members of a colony are capable of surviving on their own, whereas the members of a true multicellular organism have developed specialisations, making them dependent on the remainder of the organism for survival. Cells reproduce through a process of cell division in which the parent cell divides into two or more daughter cells. In eukaryotic cells, these proteins may then be transported and processed through the Golgi apparatus in preparation for dispatch to their destination.
- As well as Judaism providing an immanent relationship with God (personal theism), in Kabbalah, the spiritual and physical creation is a paradoxical manifestation of the immanent aspects of God's Being (panentheism), related to the Shekhinah (Divine feminine).
- Aristippus of Cyrene, a pupil of Socrates, founded an early Socratic school that emphasized only one side of Socrates's teachings—that happiness is one of the ends of moral action and that pleasure is the supreme good; thus a hedonistic world view, wherein bodily gratification is more intense than mental pleasure.
- The Sunni and the Ahmadiyya concept of pre-destination is divine decree; the Shi'a concept of pre-destination is divine justice; in the esoteric view of the Sufis, the universe exists only for God's pleasure; Creation is a grand game, wherein Allah is the greatest prize.
- Theists also hold the view that humans find their meaning and purpose for life in God's purpose in creating.
But in the spring of 1955, following a horrific accident at the famed Le Mans road race that killed more than 80 people. The road course “went up and down mountain grades, past decaying mud buildings of villages almost untouched by the present,” LIFE wrote. Dancer Barrie Chase rehearsed with Fred Astaire for a TV performance, 1960.
Personal Development
An alternative, humanistic approach poses the question, "What is the meaning of my life?" Opinions vary on the usefulness of using time and resources in the pursuit of an answer. The search for life's meaning has produced much philosophical, scientific, theological, and metaphysical speculation throughout history. Thinking and discourse on the topic is sought in the English language through questions such as—but not limited to—"What is the meaning of life?", "What is the purpose of existence?", and "Why are we here?".
This principle was formulated by considering, first, how macroscopic order is generated in a simple physical, non-biological system far from thermodynamic equilibrium, and then extending consideration to short RNA replicating molecules and then further to more complex forms of life. Astrobiology studies the possibility of different forms of life on other worlds, including replicating structures made from materials other than DNA. Responding to an interview question from Richard Dawkins about "what it is all for", James Watson stated "I don't think we're for anything. We're just the products of evolution." Emerging research shows that meaning in life predicts better physical health outcomes. Alongside this, there are a number of theories about the way in which humans evaluate the positive and negative aspects of their existence and thus the value and meaning they place on their lives. Sociology examines value at a social level using theoretical constructs such as value life science content marketing theory, norms, anomie, etc.

Travel back in time with treasured photos and stories, sent right to your inbox Jinx Falkenburg admiring a wedding gift from actress Paulette Goddard the day after Falkenburg received a marriage proposal from Tex McCrary, 1945. P.S. If you happen to be a fan of bears, LIFE has a special issue devoted to these fascinating animals. Mary Faulkner went limp with relief after realizing that her husband was safe during the 1953 Pan Am road race, in which nine drivers died.
Synthetic biology is a new area of biotechnology that combines science and biological engineering. Stars in regions with a greater abundance of heavier elements that can form planets, in combination with a low rate of potentially habitat-damaging supernova events, are predicted to have a higher probability of hosting planets with complex life. The inner and outer radii of this zone vary with the luminosity of the star, as does the time interval during which the zone survives. For example, lichen could survive for a month in a simulated Martian environment. Investigation of the tenacity and versatility of life on Earth, as well as an understanding of the molecular systems that some organisms utilise to survive such extremes, is important for the search for extraterrestrial life.

Feininger’s work is a reminder that LIFE’s photographers, in addition to being chroniclers of their times, could also be artists who advanced the craft of photography. The image could have come from a ’50s sci-fi movie called The Cameraman with the tagline “He sees all.” Feinginger found inspiration for the project in 1951, when he took the picture of a young photographer named Dennis Stock for a basic story on the winners of a magazine contest. These questions have resulted in a wide range of competing answers and explications, from scientific theories, to philosophical, theological, and spiritual explanations. Carlyle called this the "Torch of Science", which burned "more fiercely than ever" and made religion "all parched away, under the Droughts of practical and spiritual Unbelief", resulting in the "Wilderness" of "the wide World in an Atheistic Century". The first English use of the expression "meaning of life" appears in Thomas Carlyle's Sartor Resartus (1833–1834), book II chapter IX, "The Everlasting Yea".

Western philosophical perspectives
Studies have reported conflicting results on correlating happiness with religious belief and it is difficult to find unbiased meta-analyses. The findings show actual human ethical reasoning to be at odds with most philosophical theories, for example consistently showing distinctions between action by cause and action by omission which would be absent from utility-based theories. If one believes that the meaning of life is to maximize pleasure and to ease general life, then this allows normative predictions about how to act to achieve this.
These subjects are mostly addressed in the fields of cognitive science, neuroscience (e.g. the neuroscience of free will) and philosophy of mind, though some evolutionary biologists and theoretical physicists have also made several allusions to the subject. Many-worlds theories claim that every possibility of quantum mechanics is played out in parallel universes. A recent trend has been models of the creation of 'baby universes' inside black holes, with our own Big Bang being a white hole on the inside of a black hole in another parent universe. Nevertheless, many physicists have speculated about what would have preceded this limit, and how the universe came into being. Though the Big Bang theory was met with much skepticism when first introduced, it has become well-supported by several independent observations. It was concluded that the fundamental order-generating process was basically similar for both types of process.
